Consistency Over Resolutions: Getting Back on Track in the New Year

The start of a new year often comes with a lot of pressure to make big New Year’s resolutions: work out every day, eat perfectly, never miss a class again. While these intentions usually come from a good place, they also tend to be all-or-nothing—and that’s often why they don’t last.

Instead of chasing resolutions this year, we encourage you to focus on something far more powerful and sustainable: consistency.

Resolutions vs. Goals: What’s the Difference?

Resolutions are usually broad, emotional, and rigid.
Examples:

  • “I’m going to work out every day.”
  • “I’ll never eat sugar again.”
  • “I’m getting in the best shape of my life.”

They sound motivating, but they don’t leave much room for real life. One missed workout or off-plan meal can make it feel like you’ve failed entirely.

Goals, on the other hand, are:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Realistic
  • Flexible

Examples:

  • “I’ll attend class 3–4 times per week for the next 8 weeks.”
  • “I’ll improve my back squat by 10 pounds by March.”
  • “I’ll get one pull-up by summer.”

Goals give you something concrete to work toward—and something you can adjust as life happens.

Consistency Is Built in Small Wins

Progress doesn’t come from perfect weeks. It comes from showing up most of the time, even when motivation is low. A few solid workouts each week, repeated over months, will always beat short bursts of extreme effort followed by burnout.

If the holidays or busy schedules knocked you off track, that’s okay. Getting back on track doesn’t require a reset or a restart—it just requires your next workout.

Set Realistic, Measurable Goals

When setting your goals, ask yourself:

  • Is this achievable with my current schedule?
  • Can I clearly measure progress?
  • Does this support how I want to feel, not just how I want to look?

Think frequency, performance, or habits:

  • Number of classes per week
  • Improving a lift, movement, or skill
  • Consistent sleep, hydration, or mobility work

Small, realistic goals stack up fast.

Share Your Goals—and Use Your Coaches

One of the biggest advantages of being part of a CrossFit gym is the support system. You don’t have to do this alone.

  • Share your goals with a coach
  • Ask for help creating a plan
  • Check in if you’re struggling or need to adjust

Our coaches aren’t just here to count reps—we’re here to help you stay consistent, accountable, and confident in your progress.

Progress Over Perfection

This year, let go of the pressure to be perfect. Missed workouts happen. Tough weeks happen. What matters is returning, refocusing, and continuing forward.

Consistency beats resolutions every time.

We’re excited to support you in your goals this year—whatever they may be. Let’s build momentum together, one workout at a time. 💪🌲
